A squirrel found itself in a precarious spot as it was stuck on a tree with a leopard, but the chase concluded with a twist that most wouldn’t expect at all. Instead of escaping from the scenario, the squirrel ended up messing with the leopard, thereby outsmarting the big cat.
Piet Van Wyk, head ranger at South Africa’s MalaMala Private Game Reserve, was on a safari when he recorded the video that was shared on YouTube by Latest Sightings.
The leopard, it so happened, was busy chasing the squirrel which was running across one branch to the other on an Apple-Leaf tree.
As the leopard crept closer, muscles taut and gaze fixed, the squirrel could barely contain its excitement. Just as the big cat neared, the squirrel shot up the tree, darting up the bark with astonishing speed.
Up and down, the squirrel danced through the branches, full of audacity and spirit. At one point, it froze right in front of the leopard’s nose, perfectly still and camouflaged. Confused, the leopard looked away, scanning for movement.
Seizing the moment, the squirrel darted off, relishing its clever escape from the mighty predator. Despite the odds, the leopard refused to give up, caught in a whirlwind of playful frustration as the squirrel expertly led it on a wild dance through the trees.

As the chase continued for a few minutes, the squirrel ran down the tree and proceeded towards the bushes. Bewildered, the leopard followed suit and ran behind the bushes, but wasn’t successful in catching the squirrel.
